Queensland Health offers nurses and midwives many interesting and diverse career opportunities. Work environments vary from rural facilities to coastal hospitals, to clinics and busy city hospitals.
There are two levels of regulated nurses in Australia – Registered Nurses (RNs) and Enrolled Nurses (ENs). Enrolled nurses usually work with a registered nurse to provide patients with basic nursing care but do less complex procedures than RNs.
Requirements to Work in Australia
To maintain registration, both RNs and ENs are subject to a ‘practice’ standards and continued professional development standards, as set by the NMBA. To work in Australia, nurses register with the Nursing & Midwifery Board (NMBA) to practice. There are plenty of opportunities to for professional development and training to enable nurses to advance in generalist or specialist roles.
Midwives
In Australia, midwifery is a separate specialist study to nursing. The 3 year university degree prepares midwives for competency and professional development across the full midwifery practice, from pregnancy, labour, birth to post natal care for women and infants.
