After feeling trapped in their home country of Holland, Claudia and Rachid decided it was time to realise Claudia’s childhood dream of moving to Australia. A migration agent advised them they would not be granted an Australian working visa. They didn’t have much money in the bank. If they couldn’t work they wouldn’t last long. But they decided to try their luck. They packed five bags, their young family and headed to Australia on a tourist visa.

Dentistry Career Opportunities at Queensland Health


Dental Health Services in Queensland offer various work environments, from clinics and hospitals to laboratories, large and small. Queensland Health has mobile dental vans, school-based locations, aged care and adult facilities in addition to outreach services at correctional centres and some hospitals.

Dentistry teams are made up of dental therapists, dental technicians, dental prosthetists and dental assistants. Dentists provide a wide range of oral health services to clients of all ages and can also work in education and research, management and policy development roles.

Queensland Health encourages contemporary minimally invasive dentistry with a strong focus on prevention. With experience and further study, a dentist can specialise in a range of areas. Development programs, in-service training and participation in research projects are also actively encouraged.

Requirements to Work in Australia

To work in Australia dentists, dental therapists, oral health therapists and dental prosthetists are all required to register with the Dental Board of Australia. If you are a dentist and were trained in the United Kingdom, Ireland or New Zealand, your qualifications may be acceptable for immediate registration. Dental professionals who are qualified to take radiographs apply to Queensland Health Radiation Health Unit for a license.
