After feeling trapped in their home country of Holland, Claudia and Rachid decided it was time to realise Claudia’s childhood dream of moving to Australia. A migration agent advised them they would not be granted an Australian working visa. They didn’t have much money in the bank. If they couldn’t work they wouldn’t last long. But they decided to try their luck. They packed five bags, their young family and headed to Australia on a tourist visa.

Visit the Murraylands and Riverland Regions
The Murray–Darling River system is one of the world’s major river networks. Its thousands of kilometres include the main channel, anabranches (streams that leave the river and re-join it further on) and tributaries entering the Murray River in New South Wales and Victoria. These include the Darling and Murrimbidgee rivers (NSW) and the Goulburn River in Victoria.
The catchment area for the system – the Murray–Darling Basin – extends into Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. It extends across one-seventh of the continent and has a population of nearly two million people. Millions of other people outside the region depend heavily upon its resources.

There’s plenty to keep you busy on or near the Murray River. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:
Canoe adventures
A canoe or kayak adventure is a great way to explore the Murray River, with a number of hire operators dotted throughout the region, including those based at Renmark, Berri, Mannum and Murray Bridge.
Loch Luna and Chambers Creek
Suitable for half-day, full-day or overnight trips, paddle through the backwaters and sheltered waters and see abundant birdlife. There’s easy access from Cobdogla and Kingston-on- Murray Caravan Park, with plenty of secluded campsites along the trail.
Water sports
A Murray River holiday isn’t complete until you get on the water. If you want to hit the water but don’t have the equipment there are plenty of places where you can hire paddleboats, canoes, life jackets and ski gear. Most towns along the Murray River have facilities for water skiing and other water sports, including boat ramps, riverside reserves and campsites.
Fishing
Dropping a line in the Murray River as the sun disappears behind the red ochre cliffs must be one of life’s most relaxing activities. Whether you’re an experienced angler or an enthusiastic beginner, the best way to discover where the fish are biting is to ask a local. Have a chat when you buy your bait and tackle, which are available at various locations throughout the region. As you don’t need a recreational fishing license in South Australia, everyone can enjoy this popular past time.
Monarto Zological Park
In the Murraylands, you’ll find Monarto Zoological Park – a 1000 hectare open-range zoo and flora/fauna sanctuary that is committed to the conservation of rare species and endangered animals. Visitors can see the animals, which includes giraffes, chimps, rhinoceros, cheetahs and the African Dog, on the ‘Zu-Loop’ bus service, enabling visitors to stop at their chosen viewing platform. More detailed, ‘up-close’ animal experiences are also available.
See the birdlife in 23 rich and diverse nature reserves
The Riverland boasts two wetlands of international importance. The magnificent ‘old mallee’ remnants that make Gluepot Reserve an international birdwatchers dream, as well as Murray River National Park. Many conservation reserves in the region are rich with waterbirds and wildlife
Monash Adventure Park and Barmera Playspace
The perfect place for the whole family. Here, playing has never been so much fun, for children and the young at heart. With free entry to both playgrounds, pack a picnic or make use of the barbecue facilities and relax. The kids will spend hours playing on the equipment and happy children make happy holidays.
