Australian employment experience

In the 10 years immediately before you lodge your visa application you have been employed in Australia:

Professional Year

If you have completed a Professional Year in Australia in your nominated skilled occupation, or a closely related skilled occupation, for a period totalling at least 12 months (1 year) in the 48 months (4 years) immediately before the day on which you are invited to apply.

Education qualifications

You have: 

Met the requirements for:

(a) The award of a doctorate by an Australian educational institution; or

(b) The award of a doctorate, by another educational institution, that the Minister is satisfied is of a recognised standard

Met the requirements for:

(a) The award of at least a bachelor degree by an Australian educational institution; or

(b) The award of at least a bachelor degree by another educational institution, that the Minister is satisfied is of a recognised standard

Met the requirements for the award of a diploma by an Australian educational institution

Met the requirements for the award of a trade qualification by an Australian educational institution

Attained a qualification or award recognised by the relevant assessing authority for the applicant’s nominated skilled occupation as being suitable for the occupation

You have completed one or more degrees, diplomas or trade qualifications for award by an Australian educational institution as a result of a course or courses:

  • that are registered courses;
  • that were completed in a total of at least 16 calendar months;
  • that were completed as a result of a total of at least 2 academic years study;
  • for which all instruction was conducted in English; and
  • that you undertook while in Australia as the holder of a visa authorising you to study.

You have been accredited at the paraprofessional level or above for interpreting or translating by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).

Partner Skills

If your partner is included in your application you may be awarded points if at time of invitation, he or she:

  • is able to satisfy ‘basic requirements’ including age, English language ability and nominated occupation; and
  • has obtained a suitable skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for their nominated occupation.

Points are only available if your partner is included in your application as an applicant. Points are not available if your partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

You will be awarded points if:

  • you have applied for a subclass 190 (Skilled – Nominated) visa; and
  • you have been nominated by a state or territory government for the purposes of the visa application; and
  • the Minister has accepted the nomination.

  • you have applied for a subclass 489 (Skilled – Regional Sponsored) (Provisional) visa; and
  • you have been nominated by a state or territory government for the purposes of the visa application; and

Designated Area sponsorship subclass 489

You will be awarded points if you have:

  • applied for a subclass 489 (Skilled – Regional Sponsored) (Provisional) visa; and
  • been sponsored by an eligible relative living in a Designated Area.
